Kids with type 1 are at risk for a host of serious sudden and long-term complications from living with diabetes. They're also at greater risk of anxiety and depression than your average youth. The physical stuff is hard, but the emotional and social stuff takes a toll.
The good news is, with a little support, a little education, and a lot of community, these risks don't have to become the reality. Studies prove that the positive, nurturing, unifying environment of summer camp makes a difference in outcomes across the board, from healthier bodies to happier minds.
Kids living with type 1 will soon become adults living with type 1. Although the summer is short, camp lasts a lifetime. Our campers carry their memories and their friendships with them for the rest if their lives. And hopefully we've flipped the switch inside them, inspiring them to take care of themselves--and each other--to live life to the fullest.
